Nudging for Cleaner Air: Experimental Evidence from an RCT on Wood Stove Usage

چکیده

Abstract Air pollution from wood burning is a serious problem in the developing world. In cities of south-central Chile, households experience extremely high ambient air levels due to massive combustion as fuel for residential heating. To address this problem, recent years new stoves—equipped with improved technologies that are designed be less-polluting—have replaced high-polluting ones. However, users’ behaviour operating these stoves key factor drives actual emissions. When users ‘choke damper’ extend time their fuel, it constrains flow and creates highly polluting process. issue, behavioural intervention was provide real-time feedback on stoves’ emissions goal ‘nudging’ them use less way. A Wood-gas Stove for Developing Countries

Through the millennia wood stoves for cooking have been notoriously inefficient and slow. Electricity, gas or liquid fuels are preferred for cooking when they can be obtained. In the last few decades a number of improvements have been made in woodstoves, but still the improved wood stoves are difficult to control and manufacture and are often not accepted by the cook. Gasification of wood (or o...

Assessing the impact of a wood stove replacement program on air quality and children's health.

Many rural mountain valley communities experience elevated ambient levels of fine particulate matter (PM*) in the winter, because of contributions from residential wood-burning appliances and sustained temperature inversion periods during the cold season. A wood stove change-out program was implemented in a community heavily affected by wood-smoke-derived PM2.5 (PM < or = 2.5 microm in aerodyna...

THE POTENTIAL USE of antibody for diagnostic or therapeutic applications in human cancer may well depend upon the ability to synthesize large quantities of monospecific "anti-tumour" immunoglobulin in vitro. In this respect, the hybridoma technology has produced murine monoclonal antibodies directed against a number of human tumour-associated antigens (Koprowski et al., 1978; Yeh et al., 1979; ...

Cleaner air, bigger lungs.

In the latter half of the 20th century, Los Angeles had, by many measures, higher levels of photochemical air pollutants than any other major city in the United States (Fig. 1). To address this problem, the California Air Resources Board and its partners became leaders in quantifying the health effects of air pollutants and in aggressively implementing pollution-control strategies. Even with th...

Mercury: Cleaner Air on the Fly?

The coal industry represents more than half of America’s energy production, and DOE estimates place the recoverable reserve at more than 250 billion short tons. Coal is notorious for its drawbacks, however, including emissions of sulfur (which in the form of sulfur dioxide can react with atmospheric water to form sulfuric acid) and mercury (a known neurotoxicant). Now scientists from the Energy...
